Gonzales Weekly!

Gonzales Weekly
09/30/13

We've finally made it!  Report cards will be passed out 10/04!

The most important part of this newsletter is that Parent Teacher Conference times are posted!  I have several days with times beginning at 7 AM and ending at 6:30 PM.  I am expected by the administration to meet with every parent that week.  Please come by my classroom door and sign up.  You can also have your child sign up for you.  Again, you can see available times on my door.  Sign up by writing your name and your child's name.  I look forward to meeting with everyone the week of October 14th!

Next quarter, I will be putting a special focus on talking and being respectful.  You may notice that your child has to run more laps, or has a detention.  Chances are, it will be due to my crackdown on talking when listening should be happening!

The Harvest Fest is four weeks away, but I"m looking for parent volunteers to help me and Mrs. Flannery at our booth!  Signup forms were passed out today.  Get them back to me as soon as possible!

In math, we will finish our unit on division, and take a test on Tuesday, then review prime and composite numbers.  In reading, we will work on AIMS preparation material on informational tables.  In social studies, we will work through a Scholastic Weekly magazine.  In writing, we will continue practicing nouns.

Spelling list for the week:
  1. torch
  2. scar
  3. harsh
  4. bore
  5. fare

Remind your child that pages 2 and 3 for their Early American Explorer report is due on Friday, and the rest of their report is due next Monday.  I will not accept ANY late reports due to time constraints for report cards.

This week in math, we will begin practicing long division.  In reading, we will finish reading Maniac Magee.  In writing, we will finish our packet on paragraphs, and write a paragraph on a character from Manaic Magee.  In science, we will continue working through our Scholastic magazine.

We have just three weeks left until the end of the quarter!

Today, we will have our representative from Roots and Shoots come in and help the class decide on a community service project!  I'm looking forward to seeing what the class comes up with!

Students' Early American Explorer reports are looking great!  Just a quick reminder: the cover page and page one is due on Friday.  Students will have to go to Homework Hall if they do not show me those two pages.  This project is designed so students only have to do two pages a week.  Please make sure they are working on this assignment all week, so they don't have to stay up late Thursday!

In math, we will take a test on multiplication and then begin our unit on division.  In reading, we will continue reading Maniac Magee.  There will be a small unit project and a test after we finish the book.  In writing, we will continue practicing paragraphs, and learning about vowels.  In social studies, we will learn more about the early American explorers that your students are doing a report on!

Just four weeks left of first quarter!

I was INCREDIBLY impressed with how quickly you and your child got their progress reports signed.  Any student who showed me their signed progress report got five points of extra credit in their lowest subject.  Remember that you can check their grades online on engrade.com.

Make sure your child brings home all of the flyers I pass out on Mondays!  I keep finding them in the recycle bin!

On Friday, I passed out an at-home research project on an early American explorer.  Two pages of research notes are due THIS Friday!  I encourage students to work on this throughout the week and MAYBE even get ahead!

In math, we will take an in-depth look at multiplication.  There will be a test next week on Topic 3!  In reading, we will read chapters 27-32 and work on characters.  In writing, we will take a test on unit 1, and then will practice writing a narrative paragraph.  In social studies, students will begin reading about early American explorers and practice the note-taking skills we worked on last week.

I hope everyone had a great three day weekend!  I know I did!

Remember that tomorrow is a dress down for a dollar day!  Those dollars go straight back into this classroom for class parties, supplies, and field trip costs!

Last week, we had a representative from the Roots and Shoots program come talk to us.  Our class will be choosing a service project and work on it throughout the year.  This should not take much extra time outside of class.

Due to poor behavior, the class was unable to earn an eegee's or pizza party for August.  Please make sure that your child understands my rules and expectations!

In math, we will continue working with multiplying numbers and understanding the different properties of multiplication.  In reading, we will read chapters 22-26 of Maniac Magee.  In writing, we will learn how to fix run-on sentences and begin practicing the main idea in a paragraph.  In social studies, we will study the Iroquois cuture.
