Gonzales Weekly!

Gonzales Weekly
11/26/12

Welcome back to school!  I hope everyone had a great long weekend!

Please make sure that your Display My Art order forms are in by TOMORROW MORNING!  We need to make sure that your orders arrive before school lets out for the holidays.

The Holiday Concert will be on December 18th.  If you are interested in coming to watch your child perform, please set aside time in the morning!

Today also marks the start of the food drive.  Please bring in one or two cans/boxes of food.  This is a great opportunity to clean out your pantry and help families in need!  As an incentive, the class that brings in the most will get a lunch party.

We are back to academics this week!  In math, we will start a new unit on data analysis, focusing on different types of graphs and analysis.  In reading, we will finish Esperanza Rising and will write an essay as the final project.  In writing, we will work on comparing nouns, as well as personal narratives.  In social studies, we will continue to explore events leading up to the American Revolution.

Gonzales Weekly

Sorry for the late post!  There were several technical glitches that caused this post to be so late!

Gonzales Weekly
11/13/12

We have a four-day week and then a two-day week!  There IS a spelling list this week but there will not be a list next week.

Progress reports came out today.  Please sign and turn them in by Friday.  If your child turns it in tomorrow (Wednesday) they get five extra credit points towards their lowest subject!  Again, if you have any questions, please feel free to email or call.

Remember that fifth grade is responsible for buying turkeys!  Albertsons has graciously offered to cook the turkeys for us.  We are asking every student to bring in $1 for the cost.  Many of you have already done this!  Thanks!

This week, we will continue to relate fractions, decimals, and percents.  There will be a test on Monday on this topic.  In reading, we will do several activities with Esperanza Rising.  We are nearly done with the book!  In writing, we are starting to learn about adjectives.  In social studies, we will cover several taxation laws that happened before the American Revolution, as well as the Boston Massacre.

Gonzales Weekly 11/05

Welcome to the last week before mid-quarter!

Please remember that next Monday is Veteran's Day and there is no school!  Starting next week, LPA will be doing a penny war to raise money for schools affected by Hurricane Sandy.  Save your spare change, because anything you can give will help!

Mid-quarter grades will come out next Tuesday.  Make sure your child is doing their homework every night!  At conferences, I made sure to emphasize just how important homework was to their grades.

Again, please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any concerns going on in the class.

In math, we will do a review of what we have learned so far with fractions and then begin to compare them to decimals and percentages.  In reading, we will continue to read Esperanza Rising.  There will be an emphasis on finding the main idea in each paragraph.  In writing, we will work on different verb tenses and also keep our word counts up for NaNoWriMo (remember, if your child writes 15,000 words by November 30th in a story, they will receive an automatic A in writing, an enriched curriculum status, and a pizza party at the start of December)!  In social studies, we will begin learning about the American Revolution.
