Gonzales Weekly
05/14/12

This is the second to last newsletter of the year!  How exciting!

I just have a couple quick points to make for this very short newsletter!

In math, we are going to finish up a review of fractions.  We will take a test either on Wednesday or Friday to see how much they’ve learned.

We will finish reading Esperanza Rising this week.  We will write a short essay on Friday.

Please note that book reports are due Friday!  We will go over the guidelines on Wednesday.  There is no reading log due this week!

In lieu of a spelling list, we are going to do a geography test on the United States.  EVERY STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO DO THIS.  They need to get a 30/50 in order to get a passing grade.  This will be a grade for social studies, as well as spelling.  They need to give the correct location of the state, as well as the correct spelling in order to receive full credit for each answer.

A great website that we have used in class is ilike2learn.com/ilike2learn/unitedstates.html  If you google “interactive united states map quiz” you can find a wide variety of other practice tests as well.

Also, I will be collecting Saxon books this week.  Please make sure that your child returns this book to me ASAP!  If the book is been lost or damaged, there will be a $60 restocking fee.

If you have any questions about your child’s grades or ensuring that you get their report cards, please contact me either through phone, email, or in person.  I want to make sure the end of the year goes smoothly!

Have a great week!

Tuesday, May 8, 2012

Sorry for the late Tuesday update!  I’ve been out since Thursday!

A quick warning:  Norovirus is going around in the school.  This virus is often called the “stomach flu.”  Please make sure that your child (and your family!) is washing their hands frequently, especially after they use the bathroom.  If  your child is feeling ANY of the symptoms of norovirus, they should stay home.

We have less than 12 days of school left!  Make sure that your child is still coming to school.  We are doing a lot of review on skills that will essential to 6th grade, especially math.  Also, I am still handing out assignments!  Make sure that they are doing their homework!  I would hate to have to hold a student back because they didn’t get their homework turned in!

In math, we will continue review of different math concepts.  This week, we are focusing on fractions.  For reading, we will continue reading Esperanza Rising.  In social studies, we will begin a discussion on their state presentation, as well as a visual component.

Spelling words for the week - please note that EVERY STUDENT SHOULD DO ALL 16 WORDS:

  1. rhythm
  2. pleasant
  3. reply
  4. meadow
  5. deny
  6. meant
  7. shove
  8. apply
  9. thread
  10. sponge
  11. endeavor
  12. oxygen
  13. nylon
  14. realm

Have a great week!
