Gonzales Weekly
09/24/12

Hello and welcome to the last week of 1st quarter!  I can't believe how fast this quarter has gone by!

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you after Fall Break at PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES.  Please make sure that you sign up for one by my door.  I have conferences ranging from 7 AM to 5:30 PM.  Every parent needs to meet with me.  I am getting this out several weeks in advance in case you need to make any arrangements for work.  Conferences shouldn't take any longer than 20 minutes, so it isn't too much time out of your day.  This is the only time I will require you meet with me, so please make sure this gets taken care of.  You can email, call, or sign up in person.

In math, we will finish up our unit on estimation and then review for the test on Wednesday, which will cover multiples, factors, prime/composite numbers, integers, divisibility rules, and estimation.  It will be a huge component of your child's math grade.
In reading, we will finish our Maniac Magee projects, most of which are posters promoting racial tolerance.  Several students decided to do a graphic novel or a monologue instead.  I am very much looking forward to seeing their finished products!
In writing, we will continue to work on organization and sticking to the main idea.
On Tuesday, your child will have the opportunity to present their biography projects.  Many students requested this, so I decided to include it!

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT FRIDAY IS A HALF DAY AND THERE IS NO LUNCH AND NO AFTERSCHOOL.  YOU NEED TO PICK UP YOUR CHILD PROMPTLY AT 11:30.

There is no spelling homework, but there will be two days of math homework, as well as a social studies assignment involving the Scholastic News newspapers.

Have a great week and a WONDERFUL Fall Break!

Gonzales Weekly

We have just two weeks left in this quarter!  We have a ton of stuff to accomplish this week and next week to make sure all of the grades get in for report cards!

Your child's biography project is DUE ON FRIDAY.  Please make sure they turn in a project.  If they do not, they will fail social studies.  I am still missing nine rough drafts.

On Wednesday, I will post my schedule for parent teacher conferences.   I NEED TO MEET WITH EVERY PARENT UNLESS I HAVE TOLD YOU OTHERWISE.  If you have a difficult schedule to work around, PLEASE SIGN UP ASAP.  I need to meet with 25 parent/guardians in one week so it will be a tight fit!  You can email, call, or sign up in person.  I'm looking forward to meeting with all of you!

For math, we will finish studying number properties and begin order of operations.  In reading, we will finish Maniac Magee and do a final project (to be done in class only).  For writing, we will learn about verbs and continue working on keeping paragraphs consistent with the main point of an essay.  In science, we will study the nervous system.

Wow, we are nearly halfway through this month already!

Please make sure to go through your child’s backpack every night!  I send home a lot of important information that you may be missing!  On Wednesday, we will have an eegee’s party as a reward for good behavior in August.  Unfortunately, the class was NOT able to earn pizza to go with it.  I hope we are able to have pizza and eegee’s next month as a result of their good behavior in September!

We have a LOT of activities this week!  In math, we are learning about integers and manipulating negative numbers.  In reading, we will continue reading Maniac Magee and doing class discussions/activities with each chapter.  In writing, we will begin a writing assignment about Maniac Magee that will be done in class.  In social studies, we will examine the events of 9/11 and do a monument project in-class.  Homework assignments for the week will be Saxon problemsets 13, 14, and 15, three spelling assignments, and a reading log.  Their rough draft for the American Revolutionary Biography project is due FRIDAY.  You may email me a copy of it if they typed it on the computer.  Your child can also show me their rough draft EARLY.  As long as I have seen their rough draft by Friday, they will get full credit for that part of the assignment.

Gonzales Weekly!

We are halfway through the first quarter already!  Wow!

Please make sure that you speak with your student about calling out during class, as well as side conversations.  This is the biggest behavior issue in this class and I would love to have parents on board to work with me to make our room the best learning environment possible!

If there are any parents interested in volunteering in my classroom one or two days a week for grading, pulling students to work one-on-one, or are interested in helping with anything else, please let me know!  I would love for more parents to come in and see how their child's classroom works!

In math, we will continue to review factors, multiples, LCM, and GCF.  Our quiz scores weren't as high as I had hoped, so we will do some more practice before moving on.  We will continue to read Maniac Magee.  We are over halfway through the book!  In science, we will learn about the nervous system.  In social studies, your child will be introduced to the biography project/paper.
We will apply what we learned about paragraphs last week in writing to our other subjects.

Spelling words are the same as last week's words.  Only FOUR students passed their spelling test, so we are going to redo the words.  ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO KNOW ALL 20 WORDS!
